Celtics History: Number of NBA Titles

A Legacy of Dominance

The Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers are two of the most iconic teams in NBA history, and they also happen to be the two teams with the most NBA championships. With 18 titles, the Celtics hold a slight edge over the Lakers, but both teams have a rich history of success.

Celtics Dynasty

The Celtics dominated the NBA in the 1950s and 1960s, winning 11 championships in a 13-year span. Led by Hall of Famers Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, and John Havlicek, the Celtics were a force to be reckoned with. They won eight consecutive titles from 1959 to 1966, a feat that has never been matched by any other team in NBA history.

The Celtics continued to win titles throughout the 1970s and 1980s, adding five more championships to their total. They won their last championship in 2008, when they defeated the Lakers in six games.

Lakers Legacy

The Lakers have also had their share of success over the years, winning 17 NBA championships. They have a long list of Hall of Famers who have played for the team, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, and Kobe Bryant. The Lakers won five consecutive titles from 1987 to 1991, and they also won two three-peats in the 2000s. They won their last championship in 2010, when they defeated the Celtics in seven games.
